MINI Rally to the Drive In for Pixels

Who wouldn’t want to see ANY movie where MINI Coopers save the day? That’s probably why the DC Metro MINIs Club got so excited when Passport MINI of Alexandria announced they’d be sponsoring a rally to the Family Drive In in Stephens City to watch Pixels!

11787466_10206004704250144_1645538791_n

Passport MINI of Alexandria is where I found My Precious and probably where I’ll by my next MINI as well!

MINIs began arriving soon after 4:00 and most of us parked at Landmark Mall because parking MINIs at Passport would have been a nightmare. After all, it’s always easier to stage 60 cars in a nearly deserted mall parking lot than it is at one of the most popular car dealerships in the world!

11774524_10206004707650229_1478304898_n

Nick was working the parking lot to make sure everyone knew how to join the club!

It was great fun checking out each other’s cars, but we all needed to check in for the Rally so we headed across Duke Street to the dealership.

Crossing the very busy intersection from Landmark Mall to Passport MINI of Alexandria

David Hellmuth and his team (and entire family apparently!) had done an amazing job of preparing for our arrival. They’d brought in tons of sandwiches, chips and drinks. We lined up to check in and got our run sheets, movie tickets and were also told we’d be receiving a voucher for $13 worth of concessions once we arrived!

11793313_10206004703450124_682894950_n

A million sandwiches from Honey Baked Ham, DC Metro MINIs ate well this night, my friends!

Everyone signed in. Krisi Hellmuth had the entire operation running smoothly and it didn’t take long for everyone to begin munching on delicious sandwiches and crispy chips.

Celia picked up her ticket and voucher from Kristi

We chatted with old friends and met a few new ones while we waited for everyone else to arrive.

Nick and Corey and I hanging out in the maintenance bay at Passport MINI of Alexandria

David welcomed everyone to the Rally and then played a round of trivia with super cool MINI prizes. I didn’t think I’d stand a chance, but nobody could win more than one and some of the most knowledgable among us quickly scored prizes and stopped paying attention. That’s when I heard David say something about a name and I blurted out “John Cooper!” Which actually turned out to be correct! I’m just lucky the ONLY name I know related to MINIs is John Cooper. Maybe its a sign and my next MINI should be a JCW convertible?

The rest of the prizes went quickly and then much to her surprise, David announced Ali would be leading the run.

11774294_10206005414027888_614512975_n

Ali as she learned she’d be guiding over 60 MINIs through heavy traffic for the next couple of hours…

We made our way back across the street to our cars and began lining up. I walked back with Ali and Jordan Hellmuth who was riding with Ali to navigate but doesn’t have a MINI of her own because she’s (her words) “a terrible driver”. Ali and I both agreed she wouldn’t be driving Tigger or My Precious but she was delightful to talk with and I later heard she was also an excellent multitasker, navigating for Ali while fielding calls and messages from her dad telling her to tell Ali to slow down.

11774262_10206005412427848_532001886_n

I started out behind DOMO with an operational radio thanks to Melissa’s friend Tad who taught me how to change the channels on my new ones.

As we left the mall I ended up near the back. We took the 395 to the 495 to the 66. Traffic was a mess because DC, but somehow I ended up right in front of Melissa. After that I spent a lot of time speeding up to catch the cars ahead of me and suddenly stopping because of traffic and repeatedly shouting into my radio “Melissa tell Tad to take a picture of my boot!” Somehow we made it past the worst of it and out to the Plains. The roads got a little twisty and I don’t know where the first few cars were because somehow Ali got out of radio range. That’s when disaster struck!

11774746_10206005411147816_2110123818_n

Still behind Nick. So far so good…

I had been behind Nick, which was fantastic because he has some sort of magical tuning and his car pops really loudly and fire shoots out of his exhaust. He also drives pretty fast but the coupe behind me didn’t. I was really focused on the first rule of MINI runs (always keep a MINI in your mirror) and as I slowed down to let the coupe behind me catch up, a mini van pulled out in front of me.

11805782_10206005410907810_2026012967_n (1)

Nice guy but not “sir speedy” if you know what I mean!

The mini van was going very slowly and I knew I was in trouble when I realized I couldn’t hear Nick’s car popping anymore. Since most people can hear his car pop within a three county radius, I was pretty sure he was out of radio range which meant everyone in front of him was as well.

There were about 15 cars behind me and suddenly I was in the lead. My route sheet was folded up and tucked away somewhere so it wouldn’t fly out and I had no idea where we were or where we were going because T Mobile. I put my windows up and turned my excellent playlist down and got on the radio to try to reach Ali. She didn’t respond so I babbled something about not knowing what the hell I was doing or where the hell we were. I was starting to panic when suddenly a melodic voice from out of nowhere said, “Sherri, you are going to want to turn left on Red Gate.” It was like an angel from above had suddenly realized I was in trouble and sent a message to guide me. Actually, it was Erik Prime, a passenger riding with Hilary a couple of cars back. I started slowing down every time I saw an intersection and then Erik said in a soothing voice, “Sherri, take a look at your odometer. In about 11 miles you are going to turn left onto Red Gate Road .”  If you ask me, we all owe our lives to Erik Prime. Well, those of us at the end of the run, anyhow.

Eventually the mini van pulled off and I sped up and then, out of nowhere, I began to hear the wonderous and unmistakable popping of Nick’s car, Mr. NonOEM. Then I crested a hill and suddenly out of nowhere, there they were!

DSC_0171

Did I mention that Erik Prime captured the most amazing photos of our cars WHILE he was guiding us from behind?!?

The rest of our journey to the drive in was pretty uneventful. Several times we got to intersections but the other cars waved us all through ahead of them, I think they were enjoying the parade of MINIs streaming by. Lots of people in their yards and driveways stood and waved as we drove past.

DSC_0212

A beautiful day to ride in your car with your top off while Erik Prime takes booty shots!

When we arrived at the drive in, they had an area roped off for us and they sent us in through the exit. I parked between Nick and the slow coupe which turned out to be the Service Manager from Passport MINI of Alexandria. He was super nice and told me he’d seen My Precious while she was getting her new wind shield. He also recognized that she’s the most beautiful car in the world, so he’s also clearly very astute.

Before I could walk away, a lovely couple approached to ask me about my daisy wheels. Turns out they live in the area and were at the drive in on a whim so their MINI was parked outside of our area. They were super excited when we pulled in because a lot of the MINIs they see in the Stephens City area apparently don’t wave (shame!)

Erik Prime stopped by with an impressive looking camera and introduced himself. He told me he’d heard me asking Melissa to have Tad take a few booty shots so he’d captured some himself and would email them to me when he got to a computer.

DSC_0052

Erik Prime should come to ever DCMM event from now on! Forever and ever!

I don’t want to name any names, but he seemed much more helpful than some others who weren’t able to attend (Sorry Craig!) and the pictures he sent me were incredible!

To be fair, Nick Wing also took some incredible photos.

Nick Wing even made My Precious look totally badass!

Next Rebecca stopped by to comment on my wheels. She drives Honeybee a beautiful Interchange Yellow cabrio and thought my wheels would look amazing on her MINI (totally agree).

Mike and Rebecca celebrating their 28th wedding anniversary at the drive in! Like teenagers!

There were Minions.

11793169_10206682032276757_1121860074_n

Minions or as I think of them Screaming Cornpops who are tearing society apart.

I wandered down to the front row and chatted with Brandy and Rey and Ali for a bit. Eventually it began to get dark and everyone made their way to their cars to watch the movie.

11721446_10206005490509800_934755391_n

Preparing for Minions

I had zero interest in Minions (and find their voices annoying) so I decided to sit in my car and blog a bit. That’s when a New Nick approached my car! He politely asked me if he could take a picture and then we started chatting about some of my mods. I asked if he was in the club and it turns out he’d just joined! He and his lovely wife Brittney had just moved to the area from Alaska by way of Alabama (Montgomery) and were going to be here for the next four years! I walked with him to his car to check it out and meet Brittney who was sitting in the back of their MINI enjoying the show. We chatted for a few minutes until some angry lady from a mini van parked next to them came over and asked me to leave because they were watching the movie (Minions?!? Really? Who let the mini van in the MINI section anyhow?) I went back to my car to blog a bit more.

When the intermission arrived, the line for the bathroom was terribly long. Apparently that’s because people like Tad and Melissa mistook it for the snack line. I didn’t stick around to find out, I roamed around a bit, said hi to Rebecca and Mark and then chatted with Brandy, Corey, Celia, Rey and Krystal.

We all returned to our cars for the main feature, Pixels.

11780597_10206006430013287_162278784_n

We did learn one important lesson from Pixels. When aliens are pixelating your nation’s treasures and you stop to take a selfie ALWAYS use a selfie stick.

I’m not going to comment on the acting or dialog, I’m pretty sure you’ve read the reviews and besides, who cares? The MINIs destroyed Pac Man before he could pixelate New York City and really, isn’t that what matters?

The film ended at midnight and it was a long drive home. As soon as the credits began to roll, cars started pulling out. I forgot to turn on my radio and missed an opportunity to caravan behind Ali, Nick and Corey which is a damn shame because I heard Nick’s flaming exhaust was spectacular at night.

Huge shout out of thanks to Passport MINI of Alexandria for sponsoring the event and to Nick Wing and Brandy Brown for taking and sharing badass photos and especially to Erik Prime for being my guardian angel and leading our strays back to the fold!

Modding My Precious, Like I Do

The day of the Drive In Rally to Pixels finally arrived and you could practically feel the excitement in the air. I decided to mod my new wind shield before the big event and since Melissa didn’t have any plans, she decided to join me. We met at Peets in Fairfax to power up and find a shady spot to apply my stickers. I had a bunch of flower stickers left over  and since my roll bars were looking slightly less than pristine so I decided to start there.

11791249_10206004404082640_397153067_o

Before you even ask, I got my flowers from Laura’s Custom Stickers on Etsy and HippyMotorsUSA.com!

Melissa documented my efforts and kept me company.

11791178_10206004403842634_250222776_o

Melissa is super helpful!

I gave her the Jack in the Box antennae topper I’d picked up for Jim Carman since he wasn’t going to make it to the drive in.

11783943_10206004403562627_402785973_o

Jack in the Box antennae toppers just scream happiness!

I also gave her my extra one to stick on top of DOMO. She had to enlarge the hole to jam it on her stubby antennae, so she whipped out her pocket knife and began carving.

11806783_10206004342641104_1028312887_o

Who wouldn’t want a Jack in the Box antennae topper #adorable #sohappy

Then we applied the stickers to the windshield.

Ta dah!

Youification is hard and we’d worked up an appetite so we popped into Chipotle for a quick lunch before heading home to prepare for the Rally to the Drive In to see Pixels!

Sunday Mornings Mean Cars and Coffee!

It was the hottest day of the year with heat advisories already issues, but does that stop the DC Metro Minis from turning out to a Cars and Coffee event? No way!

11741692_10205947937631014_661993644_n

Early arrivals for Cars and Coffee

When I got there, Catalina and her brother, Nick and his roommate, and Quitta were already there. I wandered over to Cameron’s Coffee and Chocolates to get a delicious frozen coffee.

11755043_10205952089174800_1677238130_o

Because it’s important to stay hydrated…

When I got back to the cars, Melissa had arrived!

11750015_10205952087894768_1235706972_o

DOMO parked right next to My Precious. Like usual!

There were cars there that weren’t MINIs as well.

11693959_10206295106248119_703923435853860883_n

Some other car Nick took a picture of because really I only care about the MINIs though I’m sure whatever this is is very nice.

We enjoyed chatting with Catalina’s brother until they had to leave. Quitta and Melissa talked discussed and showed off tattoos.

The MINI family is very close.

Nick and his roommate had to leave to shop at Ikea.

11748250_10205952085574710_88324616_o

Roommates gotta shop.

The temperature was steadily rising so Melissa, Quitta and I decided to part ways before we melted.

Sitting at a red light in the sun on the hottest day of the year is much more exciting when a GP rolls up next to you!

Meet and Greet Madness

This month’s Meet and Greet was hosted by Passport MINI of Montgomery County and though the day began with heavy showers, everyone had a great time!

11749505_10205942209647818_92249981_n

Uh oh, not a great time to motor topless.

I met Melissa at her house so we could caravan up. Originally we’d planned to hit up a car wash on the way, but because of the heavy downpours we decided there wasn’t much point. We rolled into MINI and found a big crowd had already arrived!

11749926_10205942207967776_25539955_o

Nick and Lt. Dan beat us there and they’d already been to Katie’s Cars and Coffee. #EarlyRisers

We met Lisa, who was new to the MINI family and a member of C3M.

Celia’s dad was handing out free t-shirts when we arrived #winning

Quitta arrived and we all chatted for a while.

11770305_10205942208967801_2036165375_o

Always fun to catch up with friends at the Meet and Greets!

Melissa and Quitta checked out the new JCW 5 door.

Melissa and I are going to get some lottery tickets now so she can have this new JCW 5 Door….

I found the new Paceman.

11756854_10205942201807622_1356852317_o

These new tail lights… Ugh! I am not a fan!

We wandered over to the parts department to say hi to Celia. She’d been in the back waiting for us to Periscope our visit. Sadly I had a weak signal. Thanks T Mobile. Celia told us the wifi password so Melissa and I both streamed a bit.

11755000_10205942200367586_984829988_o

Shiny!

Then we wandered back to the parts department to browse through the MINI goods. Several people picked up some new MINI swag. We all realized it was close to lunch time and decided to have an impromptu After Burger. Since Dice Burger loves MINIs and the rain had stopped and we all love driving, we decided to head to Annandale.

11770344_10205942493534915_730965943_o

I was in front of Nick so I didn’t get to see the flames that shoot out of his exhaust. Dammit.

Melissa led the way. I pulled out right behind her and the caravan was off!

11748320_10205942493294909_1354394457_o

Super excited to meet Lisa who was also adventurous enough to join us at the Dice Burger After Party!

Unfortunately, Melissa had avoided the Express Lanes since Nick doesn’t have an EZ Pass and Arnold Schwarzenegger got confused. Suddenly we were all weaving in and out of traffic and exiting the 495. We traveled around a few pothole laden roads and ended up on the 66 which took us back around to the 495. One of my favorite thing about MINI drivers is that we generally don’t get upset when the leader makes a wrong turn and we end up going the wrong way because MINI…

11770097_10205942979707069_265721641_o

Lt Dan avoiding the potholes behind me!

When we finally arrived at Dice Burger, there was plenty of room to park.

11760407_10205942491934875_784526398_o

MINIs love the Dice Burger!

They were really happy to see us, but wanted to know why Ali wasn’t with us! We ordered and got a table. They’ve added some new items to the menu, I got the shrimp sandwich.

11768683_10205942528255783_2054579343_o

Dice Burger’s new Shrimp Sandwich, which I highly recommend!

None of us were successful at rolling the dice for free burgers, but we didn’t care because the food was delicious and the company was outstanding!

11770289_10205942522295634_806812159_o

I don’t know what Nick ordered but it looked delicious and it was nearly as big as he is!

Lisa asked about driving a MINI in the snow. Lt. Dan said he only drives his jeep in the winter and then told me about the Lava Jacket (which I am going to totally look into…)

11263676_10205942491374861_852904113_o

Nobody was successful with the dice rolling today, but who cares! We had fun!

We also reminisced about our adventures on the Dragon. MINIs Slay the Sleeping Dragon is coming up this fall. Although I will be out of town and will have to miss it, it looks like a LOT of fun.

Eventually the party ended and we said out goodbyes until the event next weekend… MINIs at the Drive In!

The DCMM Pirate Picnic

When our ship arrived, we stormed the shores to plunder our picnic pavilion!

11733694_10205899536261010_168671886_o

DC Metro MINIs members sure know how to enjoy a picnic!

Ali had arrived early and strung up the backdrop for the photo booth and had already organized the grilling. Rey, Nick and Brian started grilling the hot dogs and Ernest grilled the burgers.

Alex was probably googling how to hang a banner…

Pies and side dishes began arriving and were placed in a strategic area.

11731446_10205899544621219_1759213082_o

When my palm trees melted in the heat, I was forced to rename my pie “Post Hurricane Pie” which still wasn’t enough to pull of a victory.

My favorite dessert was the cookies!

Hilary made MINI shaped cookies and one that was shaped like a flower, which was the most beautiful and delicious cookie EVAH!

The photo booth area was a lot of fun. Little Rey performed the art direction for many of the shots and there were a lot of great props to choose from.

Pirates Storm the White’s Ferry

As soon as I woke up there was a message from Melissa inviting me over to prepare for the picnic at her house. I was bummed it was raining, but I loaded up my pie and my costume and headed her way. She made some coffee and waffles and we got all pirated up. We also did a last minute equipment check for the photo booth.

IMG_0131

Photo app check!

The rain finally stopped and we loaded the cars and headed out to the pre picnic run Alex and Hilary had set up. We were the first to arrive so Melissa parked DOMO and hopped in My Precious and we drove over to the Starbucks drive thru.

11724968_10205907401217629_1712971963_o

Melissa livestreamed our coffee run on Periscope. And BTW you know they’ve seen some odd sights when 2 pirate chicks in a flowered MINI with daisy wheels visit the Starbucks thru and they don’t even give you a second glance.

Alex arrived and we took a few pictures to share with our followers.

Once upon a time I didn’t care about tires or wheels. I don’t think I’d ever even said the words “brake dust” out loud.

Alex and Hilary led the drivers meeting and Alex explained the route.

Drivers meeting. No run sheets needed since it was a simple route.

I was really concerned about preserving my pirate hair since the sun came out and my top went down.

IMG_7930

Pirate hair

I took off my adorable pirate hat and tried to protect my pirate hair with a pashmina but the brutal heat and relentless sun forced me to give up that plan. Instead I cranked up the AC and rolled up my windows, which was slightly less fun but did preserve the integrity of my look.

When we arrived at the ferry we didn’t make it in time to board, which was great cause that gave us an excuse to get out and take more pictures of our cars.

Finally the ferry arrived and we slowly boarded the ship…

I guess the White’s Ferry has been invaded before because having a bunch of pirates on board didn’t seem to upset the captain of that vessel. At all.

Pre #DCMMPiratePicnic Happy Hour at Ted’s Bulletin

Hilary was kind enough to set up a Happy Hour event at one of our favorite places, Ted’s Bulletin. With only two days left to prepare for the #DCMMPiratePicnic, we knew turnout would be low. After all, pirate costumes, pies, and side dishes take time, right?

Rey and I were the first to arrive and we enjoyed a spirited discussion about my new job and his commute. Hilary arrived shortly after and Melissa was right behind her. We all ordered some dinner and the bartender suggested some Tots with bacon and cheese.

You can see what we thought of the Tots with bacon and cheddar.

Nick arrived right before the torrential downpours.

We saw Craig drive up and thankfully the rain stopped right before he walked over from the parking garage. Almost like the heavens didn’t want to spoil his look by raining on his parade!

When Craig arrived we had a full table!

It's always so nice to see Craig arrive. He's very helpful!

Sadly, Haemish had to go back to work and he was the first to leave us.

First to leave the party, he’s a hard worker!

We discussed our plans for the #DCMMPiratePicnic and who was bringing what for the pie contest and the side dish contest. I’m feeling pretty confident about my Treasure Island Pie (good luck Quitta!)

We noticed that Rey ordered a cup of coffee…

Still working on getting picked up by @menandcoffee We won’t quit! We aren’t quitters!

It was time to go so we all settled our bills.

Super friendly wait staff at Ted’s Bulletin. It’s one of the reasons why we keep going back!

And then we all walked outside to discover the sun shining and the birds singing!

11733776_10205890859964108_332271092_o

It wasn’t actually birds singing it was what appeared to be some sort of jazz band. Although they weren’t actually playing and that’s probably for the best since I am not a fan of jazz.

We all walked over to the Target parking lot, because free parking!

11725176_10205890859044085_37219280_o

Traipsing through the park to reach the parking lot, together, like a club!

And we stopped for the obligatory Target selfie.

Sorry for blocking your cute little head with my gigantic one, Hilary! #SelfishSelfieQueen

Craig and Melissa had parked near me, which meant we got to spend some time talking about our cars!

MINIs!

MINIs!

And we even took a few shots to use for our pending DCMM T Shirt Campaign!

Soon this lovely painting will be replaced with an even lovelier picture of a #DCMM T Shirt now available for pre order at http://dcmm.storenvy.com/

Celebrating America’s Birthday in my own Hometown

When Lisa and I got up and decided to go and get some breakfast, we were delighted to find a farmer’s market right outside our hotel!

11717160_10205843237493576_2144848435_n

Farmer’s market on our doorstep? How convenient!

Literally, right outside the door!

11725507_10205842275669531_1803494059_o

And it was 72, my favorite temperature. #LivingTheDream

We strolled through the market and browsed among the stalls of organic veggies and fresh flowers. There were lots of samples, and after sampling a variety of Oh! Juice, we decided to have a liquid breakfast!  I had the Maca Mylk and Lisa got the Strawberry Maca Mylk. (which I’d have chosen had I known about chia seeds!) We continued on and then found some actually tasty, gluten free, vegan coconut treats. I have no idea what they were but it really made my breakfast complete.

Making healthy choices. To make up for the #BestDonutsInTheWorld at the #DonutBar

We headed back to the hotel to pick up our bags before our ride arrived. Connie drove us out to Lisa’s house to care for the pets and then we went to Baja Betty’s to meet Uncle John, my BFF Jenni and Lisa’s BFF Sherry for brunch.

Baja Betty’s is a fantastic brunch spot in the Hillcrest area. They offer a bottomless brunch that includes a buffet of delicious Mexican food for $12.95. When we arrived we found Uncle John already there and he’d even secured a table!

11715380_10205844692809958_616114880_o

Brunch at Baja Betty’s is always a good idea!

Shortly after we sat down I got a message that Jenni was nearby. Though Jenni actually lives in Phoenix, her family had been vacationing in San Diego and when she found out I was coming she extended her stay. Her husband Patrick and son Hudson were going on a multi day fishing trip to catch Jenni some tuna and she was going to hang out with Lisa and I. When Lisa’s bestie Sherry arrived our party was complete!

The food was delicious and the company was even better! I tried the sangria, because it has fruit and that’s a healthy choice, but eventually I was forced to switch to champagne. We had a great time and then Jenni, Lisa, and I decided to head downtown to get ready for the fireworks. Connie drove us again, which I appreciate SO much more now than I did as a teen!

A lovely day to stroll by the bay in Seaport Village

We checked into the Embassy Suites and walked across the street to Seaport Village. We all shopped for some souvenirs and cute hats to wear to the fireworks. I had some buyers remorse for not buying a flower crown at the fair so I was delighted when I found one in the hat shop!

11727964_10205849833338468_233471046_o

I’d regretted not buying a new flower crown at the Fair, thankfully the hat shop had two left.

It’s important to stay hydrated and Lisa knew which restaurant made pineapple infused vodka so we put our name on the wait list at the Edgewater Grill for a table outside. We took a few selfies while we were waiting until a super helpful patriot wandered over and insisted on taking it for us.

11665796_10205847665164265_131462012_o

This woman was very sweet and clearly loves America very, very much.

Our table had a fantastic view. We got a few appetizers to go with our pineapple infused vodka drinks and had a great time!

Sisters don’t shake, sisters gotta hug!

And practiced our bar tricks.

11715519_10205847246073788_1957418577_o

Ta dah!

We walked back to the hotel and found out that Debbie was on her way to join us for the fireworks. We celebrated that at the happy hour in the hotel lobby, and then went outside to meet Debbie.

11701486_10205850608117837_1913217577_o

While we were waiting, Jenni offered the pedi cab driver some helpful tips like “have you ever thought about having a theme?” and “maybe you should play some fun music?” and “If you didn’t have that cigarette hanging out of your mouth you’d get more business.” He kept responding “lady, I’ve done this for 18 years! I know what I’m doing!”

We sat on the benches just outside the door to wait for her and Lisa pointed out that would be the best vantage point for the fireworks. It was right on the corner of Harbor Drive and Pacific Highway.

Lisa was right! The front porch of the Embassy Suites is the perfect place to see the fireworks!

Thank God there wasn’t a repeat of the Great San Diego Fireworks Fail of 2012! And it was truly awesome to watch the fireworks exploding over the USS Midway.

Revisiting the San Diego Fair

It’s been a couple of years since I’ve been home during fair season, so when my sister told me we could attend on my first day back I was super excited. She and I got up early and decided to power up for the event by walking to the Donut Bar, a San Diego landmark.

11715517_10205831351396431_827150132_o

Apparently the owner of the 6th Avenue Bistro is the only person in San Diego who is unenthusiastic about the #DonutBar and their #bestdonutsintheworld.

The Donut Bar opens at 7 every day (8 on the weekends) and stays open until they run out of donuts. It was on Lisa’s bucket list so we didn’t even care about standing in line for an hour before we could place our order. In fact, standing in line was one of the best parts. Everyone was super excited to be there. At one point Uncle Sam told us we were only about 30 minutes from the door, but we were having fun so we didn’t mind.

11725533_10205831348596361_119367543_o

Super helpful to have crowd control when you make the #BestDonutsInTheWorld

The list of donuts is different every day and they cross the donuts off as they run out.

11724663_10205832523505733_1414147940_o

We were stoked none of the ones we’d decided to try were missing when we got there, but once we made it into the building, it was much harder to choose.

11664907_10205832523025721_1852429150_o

We didn’t get it, but the Donut Bar is famous for the donut that contains a Pop Tart. USA! USA!

We Periscoped our taste test so everyone else could enjoy our delicious donuts as well (you’re welcome Periscope followers). Then Connie and Debbie arrived and we piled into the car and rode to the fair.

11715465_10205833689774889_92276714_o

Riding in the back seat with my sister was much more fun than I’d remembered. And we didn’t even make our mom drop us off a few blocks away!

As soon as we entered we stopped to buy some new hats.

11724737_10205834902725212_2084338309_o

Sisters with hats!

Then we got some fish tacos and some street corn…

11725298_10205834902405204_1876199654_o

We walked over to the vendors area to do a bit of shopping and I got lured into the whiten your teeth booth.

11725299_10205835207052820_775290210_o

Shiny new teeth!

Sadly that meant I couldn’t enjoy the bacon wrapped turkey leg we passed by afterwards. I did, however, talk Lisa into posing as floozies for an old timey photo. She asked them if we would get to choose the photo, but they told us the photographer would select the best one out of all the shots, we had to pay up front and they’d be ready in less than fifteen minutes. We handed over our cash. I had no idea we would have to step into a curtained off alcove, remove our tops, let some kid strap a faux corset on us and then parade across the stage to the “photography studio”. The “photographer” sat us on a stool, draped boas around us, slapped a hat on our heads, handed us a prop, and then took two photos. I tried to ask about my flattened bangs but it was too late and we were being ushered back across the stage to the closet again where they were already strapping a corset on some other girl while we waited for them to remove ours.

While we were waiting for them to finish our picture we decided to ride the Sky Tram to Kiddie Land. When we landed, we walked over to the Texas Tourism booth since I’d spotted a photo studio from the air. We had to give them our contact information and answer a few questions about Texas (which earned me a prize even though I flunked miserably). Then they let us pose for our Texas picture.

11716062_10205841729135868_457745579_n

Yeehaw!

We took the Sky Tram back to the main area. This time Lisa and I were one the first one, which provided us with endless entertainment.

11720325_10205836461044169_912424701_o

When we arrived at the photo studio they had our photo and we discovered that posing for that picture was the biggest waste of money of all time ever!

11721052_10205836715570532_937623655_o

This camera man should not be allowed anywhere near a camera! If only the San Diego Fair had an Alicyn Drew, maybe then I wouldn’t have the smashed bangs or crazy eyes and Lisa would have some boobs.

I still didn’t want to mess up my teeth, so I skipped the snacks on the way out. I didn’t mind since I really wanted to treat my family to dinner afterwards anyhow.

We caught the train back to the parking lot, found our car and left. Since Lisa had to care for her pets, we dropped her off first. Then we left Debbie at her house. I rode with Connie, who wanted to go home and feed and walk her dogs before shuttling Lisa and I downtown to our hotel. Totally worked out for me, since she mixed me an outstanding margarita before she left (thanks mom!)

11720863_10205836984497255_816137256_o

Almond flavored tequila in a bottle as big as her torso. This is my new favorite thing!

On the way back to pick up Lisa, I asked her to stop so I could spring for dinner. Nothing but the best for my family!

11713164_10205837639633633_1419323496_o

Even if they weren’t 2 for $! they taste like a handful of heaven, who’s family wouldn’t be excited when you treat them to dinner?

Connie drove us to the Doubletree Downtown and dropped us off. When I tried to check in, they kept calling me Hillary. I usually answer to anything, so I didn’t really pay much attention, until she asked about my credit card. Somehow we discovered that she had checked me in under the wrong name. There was a Hillary and a Mark Wilson who were also booked there. It took her a while to figure it out and somehow we ended up on the seventh floor with a lame view of the pool. Pretty sure Hillary and Mark got to enjoy my room on the Diamond Floor, but it was only one night and Lisa and I are nothing if not resilient.

By the time we’d dropped our bags in the room, we had just enough time to get a couple of drinks in the hotel bar. I ordered the Sangria, but when it came it was a dark purple and I didn’t really want to risk staining my teeth! Lisa had a beer and when she didn’t like hers, the bartender gave her a different one. She liked that one so much she had several more!

It sure was good to be home!

#EpicMINIRally Finish Line

When the last car rolled out of the Cheeky Checkpoint, Melissa and I headed over to PTuning for the scoring and trophy ceremony. By the time we arrived most of the teams had as well!

Caravan of two to the finish line!

Caravan of two to the finish line!

Catalina was welcoming teams across the finish line. She’d strung up some paparazzi and checkered flags and was bouncing around with my silver pompoms so it was very exciting when we finally got there!

The perfect way to end a Rally! Thanks Catalina!

Most of the teams were inside PTuning enjoying some punch and pie.

And minion pops (thanks PTuning!)

Putting provided the MINIons!

They’d set up the scoreboard, though obviously nobody working the event had bothered to read my Run of Show or Whiteboard Mock Up… not that I’m bitter… much…

Team Man with Coffee’s fan club had arrived and were mingling with a good part of Team Rocket.

Kids playing at Finish Line

A car rally brings all the folks together!

There was a lot of excitement when the scoring finally began. We tried to list the teams in order of seniority to give our newest members the biggest advantage! Team DILLIGAF went first and promptly gave all of their extra bonus miles to Team OEM.

Ali as MC

Ali allowed each team to decide how to apply their mileage coupons, deducting them from their own scores or adding them to a competitors and by competitor apparently that meant Haemish!

Team OEM responded by giving the same number of miles back to Team DILLIGAF. That’s when our Ultimate Authority (Hilary, because who could argue with her, really?) stepped in. While she wanted to recognize the sheer depth of Team OEMs cheating, she also didn’t want him to have an unfair advantage by creating his own “golden ticket” mileage coupons. She decreed that he could keep half of the miles he’d accrued using his strategy to get the judges to bribe him and the other half would have to be used to benefit other teams! Genius!

The epic cheating by Team OEM backfires when the Ulitmate Authority stripped him of half his invented points and awarded them to other competitors!

The epic cheating by Team OEM backfires when the Ulitmate Authority stripped him of half his invented points and awarded them to other competitors!

Team OEM threw his penalty miles to the newbies and scoring continued. Team Coupe came out of nowhere (though clearly Haemish saw him coming a mile away) and racked up the bonus miles. Craig continued the trend of handing over extra miles to Team OEM and then all the other teams joined in to pile on as well.

Team Lillith deciding where to spend their mileage coupons

Team Lillith deciding to put their extra miles… In Haemish’s column! Surprise!

As the official Marketing Subcommittee and primary event planners, Melissa and Ali and I took the privilege of awarding the final bonus miles. Ali gave miles to anyone wearing orange, and Melissa rewarded anyone who used a paper map and then it all came down to me…

Score Board

The final scores came down to me and my passionate commitment to extend the reach of the DC Metro MINIs beyond our own social networks… But wait, did someone actually hashtag #SherriRocks? Why yes they did! #Winning

I decided to reward anyone who had utilized social media to promote the event and began to ask who’d posted on social media channels and that’s when I learned about the #SherriRocks hashtag Team Dynamo had created… And used! I threw them thirty bonus miles, bumping them up to second place.

Team Dynamo takes second

Sorry I suck at the maths Team Dynamo! I should have given you 32 points. Let’s try again next year! #SherriWillStillRock

After the final scores were tallied, Team Britt pulled out the victory (Homies!)

Team Britt takes first place

Team Britt celebrating their well deserved victory, though not with Jack in the Box tacos like they deserve. But at least we had pie and punch!

My favorite Team Dynamo came in second (sob, sorry about my math skills, boys)… And somehow, no one really knows quite sure how, Craig Baron walked away with the third place prize.

Team Coupe takes third

Stealthy, quiet, you never see him coming until he sweeps away with your third place trophy… Team Coupe!

We didn’t have any pictures from the Shiny Checkpoint, but they did bring the art back to the finish line and before everyone left we showed them off!

I'd hang tis on my wall, Team Veloz.

I’d hang this on my wall, Team Veloz.

Guessing this is Team Max but it’s so MINI it is hard to tell!

After all the trophies were handed out, the punch and pie consumed, there was only one thing left to do…

Waiting for scores

Wrapping up the event and heading next door to the brewery for the first after party!

After party at the Brewery!
