Saratoga Springs: An Amazing Little Town in Upstate New York

Our quest to visit Sarah’s recommended sights continued…

Img_7328

I started my day by attending my new PTSA’s meeting (Empire State PTSA. I’m a member, why aren’t you?) After we spent some time in the General Session, Ethan, Sharlene and I headed out to the lobby for a couple of planning meetings.

Img_7347

Ethan assisted with the Reflections Exhibit…

Img_7352

And then it was time for lunch! We headed back out to the city to see what else we could check off the list.

Img_7359

First up was a stop at Broadway Kettlecorn.

Img_7364

Broadway Kettlecorn is a tent outside the Downtowner Motel where hot young guys whip up delicious batches of super sweet corn.

Img_7365

We were short on time, so we stopped at the candy shop to pick up a pig…

Img_7363

And then stopped back into the wine shop to update William on my travel plans (See Greetings from Saratoga Springs).

Img_7384

And then it was back to work!

Img_7370

I was copresenting with Laura Bay in the Alabama Room (will I never escape it!?!)

Img_7354

And then we rounded out the evening at the convention banquet.

Img_7378

We went our separate ways to afterparty. Ethan went to polish his presentation for the next day, I headed to the bar with my very good friend Vito Borello, and Sharlene went to the Convention Party for one last fling with our NYSPTA friends.

Img_7381
I hope all of you get a chance to one day visit Saratoga Springs and that you have a friend like Sarah who can send you to the most wonderful spots!

Saratoga Springs Continues to Enthrall…

Img_7301

Day two of the NYSPTA Convention trip was actually day one of the NYSPTA Convention. We got off to a great start by attending the state board meeting and talking with some incredibly passionate and talented advocates. Then it was time to break for lunch…

We checked Sarah’s list and headed over to Ravenous, a delightful creperie. Tucked away on a little hill just off the main street, Ravenous offeres savory and sweet crepes that will make you think you are sitting in a small cafe somewhere in France. Or at the very least, Canada.

Img_7289

The fries were the first I’ve had that have EVER compared to the fries Evelyn and I had in Niagara Falls (it’s true, Evelyn, come try them!)

We returned to the convention and continued out work.

Img_7310

After work, we hooked up with Sharlene’s friend Scott and stopped into the Cantina. We warmed up with a quick pitcher of margaritas and when they closed we popped over to the City Tavern.

Img_7334

They have many different levels and Sarah says the rooftop patio is heated. Sadly, it was closed while we were there, but I take her word for it!

Img_7318

In an attempt to maximize the time we had to visit the locations on Sarah’s list, we headed over to D’Andrea’s Pizza. Sarah correctly informed us that they had many different types of pizza by the slice. And more importantly they have BBQ chicken pizza…

Img_7323

We headed back to the hotel to call it a night.

Greetings from Saratoga Springs

Consider yourself fortunate if your job involves improving the lives others AND the opportunity to visit exotic new locations you probably wouldn’t otherwise get a chance to see… And so off we went to the NY State PTA Convention!

Img_7266

My friends (and co-workers) Sharlene and Ethan and I boarded an early flight from DCA to Albany. Thankfully, Sharlene’s roommate Sarah is a graduate of the local University (Skidmore) and thoughtfully prepared an Official Unofficial Guide to Saratoga Springs that helped us identify the venues we really needed to see between meetings!

Img_7268

Saratoga Springs is famous for it’s horse racing, and Sarah tells us the population triples during horse racing season each summer.

Img_7279

On our way to the Convention, we stopped for a quick lunch at the Local Teahouse and Tavern. The teas were delightful. I had tea sandwiches and soup, which was even better than the tea. Ethan had his first encounter with Bangers and Mash and Sharlene opted for the Banger Butty (google it!)

Img_7271

Afterwards, we stopped by Sarah’s Alma Mater to shoot a quick photo.

Img_7292

Walking to the hotel we visited a couple of shops and stumbled across Compton’s, which we were told opens at 4:30 am and should NOT be visited sober…

Img_7276

And the Putnam Market was right next door, so we popped inside to shop for souveniers to take back to the office. That’s where we met William.

Img_7277

William is from London, which coincidently is where I am headed next week! William was dismayed by my plans to drive from Heathrow Airport to York and said “Well, that sounds bloody awful doesn’t it” (which with his fantastic accent sounded much nicer!) He talked me into rerouting through Oxford instead, which wasn’t hard to do once he made the Harry Potter connection.

Img_7282Img_7283
Sharlene, Ethan, and I continued our trek through town, and totally hit the urban areas before heading back to the hotel to start conventioning…

(Stay tuned for part two!)

A Weekend in Chicago

Could there be anything more fun than meeting some of your best friends from high school in Chicago for a Rick Springfield show?

Img_6969

I think not!

Img_6972

Rick Springfield looked pretty hot from where we stood, but the rabid fans who arrived much earlier than we did prevented us from getting close enough to throw the thong Jane brought and he sounded like a bit of an asshole.

Img_6997

Afterwards, Bob met us and took us to Boys Town for a drink.

Img_7013

Jane met some nice young Boy Scouts at Sideways, a super hip gay bar.

Img_7014

The next day, after brunch, we went to see Kinky Boots, a new musical based on one of my favorite films (which was based on a true story). It’s heading to Broadway this spring. Go see it, thank me later!

Img_7023

We were invited to stick around for a focus group aftewards, where Andrea met Cindy Lauper (who wrote the score for the production) and we each secured an autograph.

Img_7018

We decided to walk to dinner so we could explore the city and made our way to the Bean.

Img_7034
Img_7033

Then we popped into Trump Tower for a cocktail.

Img_7040

We ended the night at some fantastic Mexican place that had some of the best grapefruit margaritas I have ever had (which probably explains why I can’t remember the name of the restaurant!).

Img_7056

The next morning, Jane and Andrea and I hopped on the train to head home.

Img_7072

My flight to Philly was repeatedly delayed so I stocked up on Garretts popcorn to buy the love and affection of my coworkers. Then the flight out of Philly was delayed over and over, allowing me to stock up on pretzels in case Hurricane Sandy left us without power for an extended amount of time. I arrived home right before Sandy, and since we never lost power, we were able to heat the dozens of pretzels I brought back! Thanks, Philly!

Color Run

Sharlene and I arrived at the crack of dawn. It was a cool fall morning, perfect for a 5K at the National Harbor.

Img_6813

Everyone was given a white tshirt and headband.

Img_6816

Erelyn, Erin and Daniel arrived shortly later. Our route started near the beach and we took off in the fourth or fifth wave or color runners.

Img_6840

Erin quickly took the lead, but Evelyn and I weren’t far behind.

Img_6845
Img_6851

We headed up the hill and prepared to enter the yellow zone.

Img_6855

It was a lot like running through sunshine. If the sunshine were a really messy poweder substance.

Img_6862

The next few stations were a bit of a blur. After the blue station we all looked a lot like Smurfs.he blue station we all looked a lot like Smurfs.

Img_6872

We crossed the finish line…

Img_6889
Img_6900

and headed to the afterparty for the color throw.

Img_6879

Afterwards, we popped into Elevation Burger for a quick and dirty lunch.

Img_6943

Color run truly is the happiest 5K on the planet!

The High Heel Race of 2012

Fall. Some people anticipate the changing of the leaves, or the cruch of fallen acorns, or the smell of a wood fire. This year I discovered a whole new reason to celebrate the change of seasons, the 26th Annual 17th Street High Heel Race.

Img_7110

Evelyn, Erin and I decided to go in drag to show our solidarity with the racing queens. Our good friends Sharlene and Dawn also joined in the fun.

Img_7111

My very good friend Benny met us there and according to him the race began in 1986 when a bunch of queens were forced to race from one bar to another.

Img_7115

Prior to the race, participants warm up by parading up and down the race route and taking the occasional photograph with adoring fans. One leather clad nun stopped because I looked “naughty” and tried to spank me.

Img_7147

Sharlene made some friends of her own.

Img_7175
Img_7177

One of the crowd favorites was (obviously) the cast of The View.

Img_7174

I have no idea who actually won the race, and it hardly matters. The best part of the evening was watching the incredibly creative (and amazingly balanced) racers put on their show!

The Final Chapter in our Canadian Tour

Img_5744

The Royal Ontairio Museum is a treasure trove of dinosaur bones and quirky exhibits. They have an extensive collection with over 6 million objects. Among the highlights? “Kunti” (the blue lady)…

Img_5773

And the shrunken head.

Img_5766

I also really enjoyed the exhibit that compared the olden suits of armor to the “new” modern ones…

Img_5763

There was an extensive exhibit of asian artifacts.

Img_5754

And a gazillion dinosaur bones.

Img_5781

Among the other highlights? Evelyn found some very realistic birds, including her favorites, owls.

Img_5791

Also, the bat cave was very nice, though I had no idea they meant actual bats and those things were creepy!

Img_5794

Afterwards, it was time to head back to the states. This provided us with another valuable lesson in convertible ownership. Reading large paper maps with your top off is challenging.

Img_5800

Since we still had some Canadian cash and the Winery Road appeared to parallel our journey, we thought it just made sense to make a few stops. The first winery was Ridge Road where I purchased a lovely rose and they provided me with a map of the vinyards and a recipe for strawberry sangria.

Img_5803

The next stop we made was at Angel’s Gate. We only stopped there because the lovely ladies at Ridge Road told us not to stop at Puddicombe which was where I wanted to go just because I thought the name was awesome. But Angel’s Gate had lovely views and was right across the street from the 30 Bench Winery, which was super convenient.

Img_5804
Img_5807

Img_5808

One the road again, we passed through customs, and for the record the American customs agent was much nicer than the Candaian! And then we headed into Buffalo.

Img_5818

Where we ate Buffalo Wings at the Anchor Bar.

Img_5826

 The end.

World’s Longest Line at the World’s Tallest Tower

Img_5720

The CN Tower is the world’s largest tower and while apparently most of Toronto lined up to see it right before we did.

Img_5677

Evelyn was not impressed.

Img_5679

It took over two hours to make it to the elevator, but once we did it was totally worth it.

The tower is 1,815 ft high at it’s tallest point and is defined as one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World. We made a beeline straight to the Horizons restaurant having worked up an appetite during the excructiatingly long wait. Thankfully, we had no problem getting a table and a Canadian adult beverage.

Img_5690

The table we we at faced east and we had a lovely view of the city. Below us, several high rises were under construction and the crains looked like tiny erector sets.

Img_5688

As we waited for dinner the sun set and the city began to light up.

Img_5689

The food was nearly as good as the view.

Img_5694

By the time we finished it was nearly dark and the moon was starting to rise.

Img_5696

After dinner we strolled around the look out level. The look out level is 113 building stories or 1,136 feet high (that’s 346 meters for my metric friends). We stood on the glass floor, though there wasn’t much of it and it was very crowded.

Img_5711

We did not attempt to scale the perimeter.

Img_5706

We spent some time with the local wildlife on our way out.

Img_5718

The CN Tower deserves it’s title as one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World. Go see for yourself!

Toronto Science Center

If you have any sort of interest in science or want to know where people with lots of children hang out in Toronto, head out to the Toronto Science Center. Two birds, one stone.

We took the subway and a bus to get there. We had an unexpected treat when a roving gang of old English Dancers hopped aboard the train with us. You may remember the last encounter we had with them from our Eastern Market post. Apparently the roving Old English dancing gangs get around…

Img_5654

And, of course burst into song…

Img_5655

Anyhow, we finally made it to the Science Center.

Img_5658

My favorite part was the planetarium, with it’s plush bean bag chairs. I would’ve enjoyed it more but the kid lying next to me kept waking me up with his kicking and squirming. The next best part was the circus exhibit. Evelyn tried the contortionist box…

Img_5665

We attempted feats of strength…

Img_5661

and…

Img_5668

I auditioned for Ring Master…

Img_5670

And played with clowns…

Img_5673

Before we capped off our visit with a visit to the Star Fleet Academy.

Img_5674

Live long and prosper!

Casa Loma

Img_5591

As the largest city in Canada, with over 5.7 million people, Toronto has a lot of attractions. We began our day at Casa Loma.

Img_5594

The lavish former home of Sir Henry Pellat sits on a hill with stunning views of downtown Toronto.

Img_5602

The house has 98 rooms and at the end of the morning it felt like we had visited each one. I know all this because of the complimentary audio tour we each enjoyed.

Img_5595

Henry Pellat founded the Toronto Electric Company and had a monopoly on providing electricity to the city of toronto before he was 30. He had an extensive tunnel connected to his stables and potting shed, but Evelyn was not impressed.

Img_5596

My favorite room was the tower with its amazing views of the city in several different directions.

Img_5621

I believe Evelyn’s favorite was the bathroom. Sir Henry had one of the very first heated human car wash showers in the world.

Img_5615

Though to be fair, I think Evelyn just enjoyed the breeze through the open window.

Img_5616

We strolled through the grounds just long enough to learn none of us were pure at heart. Apparently when someone who is pure at heart rings the bells on the dragon tree, the dragons will come to life and fly off in different directions. Or so I’m told…

Img_5639

Afterwards Aruna and Evelyn photobombed a wedding.

Img_5636

Evelyn wasn’t impressed with the bride’s dress.

Img_5641

Off we went to lunch at Crepes A Gogo.

Img_5646

Lunch involved Limonana and hot and delicious crepes from a delightful French Canadian woman (Gogo) at this charming sidewalk cafe.

Img_5648

Afterwards we headed over to the Metro to catch two trains and a bus on our way to the Toronto Science Museum.
